It's February.  That means we have to start a new one of these.

Merry February!

Perhaps I'm a little slow on the uptake, but I just realized something over the past couple of days, looking at Sandusky and other anthro web comics.

I never noticed it before now, but on felines, artists tend to draw the whiskers only on the females, even though both have them. Is this a common artistic way of subtly distinguishing between male and female felines?

I don't think there's any sort of whisker conspiracy, if that's what you're asking.    The primary reason I added whiskers to Sedona is that Sandusky doesn't have them (well, he has them - they're just "invisible").  So, that was an extra way for me to distinguish the two.  When I first started out, my coloring techniques were a bit different, and whiskers tended to complicate that process on Sandusky.  If I were to start over from scratch today, I would probably add his whiskers back in.

In The Lion King, the roles are actually reversed.  The females are drawn sans whiskers, while the males have them.  I'm not sure why artists make their decisions one way or the other, but it often seems to be an extra way to distinguish between the sexes (not that it's all that difficult to tell a male African lion from a female one).

I suppose that, one one hand, you could argue that human males have "whiskers", so it's the male feline that should have the whiskers.  On the other hand, I've always considered whiskers to be cute on animals, and I always equate "cute" with "female".

So, in your case: Whiskers = Cute Female.

Yeah, I admit that was a really bad way to begin the month of February.  smile/rosebud.gif

I've hidden the picture behind a link for those who have stomach issues.

Back on topic - I know why the females in Lion King does not have whiskers... They ran out of time! It took too long to draw them, and they decided to shave the lionesses...!   It is mentioned on the commentary track on the DVD.

Bah, that picture can't negate the extreme cuteness of little Sandusky.    You just need a thicker skin, I saw it as funny in the context.

And I had a real fine start to February too, first real snowfall in months so naturally I had to drag out my snow blower, I did lots of maintenance to it last summer and fall. Ten minutes later the throttle linkage broke and once I sorted that out, I ran out of fuel and it refused to start after I filled the tank.  smile/mad.gif  Still don't know what happened.
