I think Mellencamp has some of Scott's facial characteristics. Look at #354 when Mellencamp first appears.

It's my tail. Don't you know it's rude to point?

That's quite possible, as both Scott and Mellencamp are drawn by the same artist.

I wish I could tell you that my intention was to draw them similarly; that, without his normal caretaker, Sandusky's subconscious has manifested Mellencamp into a feline version of his usual caretaker, Scott.  But, admittedly, it's just an odd coincidece.

On second thought, let's pretend it's the first one.

ooo... I think Bunker knows too many numbers...

I think the Dusker is about to have another reality check, but after the confrontation, the bear will help Sandusky adapt to the environment as he helps Sandusky find Scott.

Eeep! smile/eek.gif Looks like it's time for Sandusky's first lesson of how things work the Wild, especially since cougars aren't the ultimate top predators around even if they come close.

Also, I'm quite sure finding a phone could prove difficult even if he could recall Scott's phone number, and I wonder how CC companies treat credit card use by the card owner's pets.

In this universe, can Sandusky's voice go through the phone?  (In some comics like Garfield, the animals use a kind of telepathy.)

It's like Get Fuzzy.  Sandusky and the rest of the animals speak directly with the humans and vice versa.  They don't, however, walk on two legs like Satchel and Bucky.  In Garfield, only the readers (and the other animals) can understand Garfield.  Jon Arbuckle hasn't a clue.

Well,
For the Sandusky comic to become like the Garfield comic, all the humour would quite literally have to be sucked out.

I'll bet the bear is some "liberated" circus bear. He won't hurt the Dusker. He prolly has quirks of his own.

What does everyone have against Garfield?  Garfield still have their jokes every so often.

I guess both Sandusky and the bear is going down!

It's time for the Family Feud! Introducing the Feline Family. Sandusky, & Mellencamp! Ready for action! And the Ursidae Family. Mr. Black Bear! On your marks... let's start... the FAMILY FEUUUUD! With the star of Family Feud, RICHARD DAWSON!

Unfortunately, they're the same jokes that Jim Davis (or whoever he has drawing and writing Garfield for him nowadays) has used time and time again over the past 30 years or so.  They may have been somewhat funny to me back in 1986, but I was eight years old at the time and I've read the same jokes dozens upon dozens of times since then.

But, do I blame Jim Davis for this?  Heck no.  I'd give anything to trade places with him.  It's unfortunate, however, that he can simply reproduce the same jokes over and over and isn't pushed to be creative any more.  But, that's how the system works.  Even though Garfield, Blondie, Cathy, etc. haven't been funny in decades, the system won't allow them to be replaced with fresher, funnier strips.

Then again, newspaper circulation is down so much today that I'm not even sure how lucrative syndication can possibly be any more.  On the other hand, I seriously doubt that Jim Davis has to plead to his readers for PayPal donations either.

Ok, I think I understand.  I dont notice it as Ive not been around long enough to see the repeats.  The closest that I know is the Peanuts is which started rerunning coincidentally the day Charles Schulz passed away, and more recently For Better or For Worse is redoing the story from the beginning.

I don't have anything against Garfield or the older strips like Blondie or Beetle Bailey. I would submit that after a run of seventy years, it's hard to shift the focus of a strip or change people's perceptions or expectations. I think that circulation has stagnated to the point that syndication has lost much of its advantage over the more popular webcomics. Webcomics operate on an entirely different business model and offer more potential to the artist, as well as more control.

One great webcomic is "Faux Pas", by Robert and Margaret Carspecken. In one of their early story arcs, Myrtle the Hen fears that her status in the barnyard will be weakened by the arrival of Cindy-a young female red fox who becomes quite attached to Randy-a male red fox who is the lead character in the strip. Myrtle does everything possible to get Cindy to leave-each attempt ending in a confrontation with Randy. Myrtle's last attempt injures Cindy and causes her to become ill. Myrtle, almost kills Cindy by administering to her human medication-ending up in a very serious case of poisoning.

At the end of the storyline, Cindy recovers and has a meeting with Myrtle. Randy leads Myrtle into a dark room in the barn, saying "Oh, by the way...Cindy wants to have a word with you...Alone." And with that, the door latches shut behind Myrtle, leaving her alone with the fox that she nearly killed. She thinks that she's about to meet her maker, but the situation ends up being anything but what she expected (a bloodbath is what she expected). I wonder what will transpire with Dickens once Bunker and Sierra get hold of him-or Sandusky, if he makes it home.

"When a man runs on railroads over half of his lifetime he is fit for nothing else-and at times he don't know that."-Conductor Nimrod J. Bell, 1896.
