John,

If you don't mind a personal question, how do you deal with putting Sandusky and friends into color when you're color blind?

Or can you see some colors?

Trying to explain color blindness is like trying to explain what a dog's nose can smell.  You'd have to experience it to truly understand it.  I do see colors.  They just aren't as distinguishable to me as they are to normal sighted people.  I have particular trouble with greens, browns and reds running together.  I do have better than 20/20 vision, though.

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to my color choices in Sandusky, and I tend to reuse the same colors over and over once I've figured out that they actually work together.  How do I choose those colors in the first place?  Well, I often take pictures off of the internet and use them to set my base colors for particular animals or objects.  The shading is simply done by manipulating those colors to be darker or lighter.

Basically, I just try to keep it as fool-proof as possible.

One of my coworkers is partially colorblind, which means that he passes about 50% of the colorblindness tests he takes.

I mention this because he's a graphic artist, a really good one too.

Here is his website:

At least you have an excuse when you put on different color socks!

I tend to purchase dress socks with patterns.  If there's any question, I just go sockless.

Hmm, easy solution. I can't be bothered to match up all stripes.

Colorblind or not, the latest strips with Champ are beautifully done and really vivid.

It's my tail. Don't you know it's rude to point?

You should see the colors he did for the cartoonish version of my gryphon alter ego. Sure, it took a bit of nudging, but he got the brown-gold tone for the wings and body feathers perfect.

John, I still think you'd make a good graphic artist or animator, with a little help from some adaptive technology to help compensate for a reduced color sense. If you don't believe me, just ask the rest of the forum.

Keep the peace(es).
